The Various Types of Alternative Energy

from:

Alternative energy produces power without significant impact on the environment.

Some types of alternative energy are:

Renewable: Renewable energy cannot be used up. Sources of renewable energy produce power continually.

This type of energy uses natural forces, which constantly renew.

Fossil fuels such as coal and oil take eons to be formed; energy formed by the wind, for example is created immediately.

When traditional sources of energy have all been used up, alternative energy will be one of the few options for the future.

Wind Energy: To create power from this type of energy, turbine engines are run by wind. The turbines connect to generators, and that is how the power is produced.

Recent innovations in turbine engines have helped wind energy become an efficent and cost-saving way of producing power.

The earliest known way to use wind to create power is the use of windmills. Turbine engines run by wind power work the same way.

Energy from the Sun: Most people may know this type of energy better than any other. Solar panels, from the little ones on a calculator to the giant ones on a roof that are able to power an entire house have been around for quite a while.

The solar (photovoltaic) cells use the heat from the sun to create energy. This is a clean source of energy which does not harm the environment.

You can also use the heat from the sun to produce electricity by producing steam. The steam created by heated water runs turbines that run a generator.

In California, this method is used to run solar powered generators, and in Australia, where there is plenty of sun, it can directly heat houses.

In remote areas such as Australia, this type of energy is especially useful since many homes cannot receive electric power by wires.

The Power of the Ocean: This is a new concept in alternative energy. Although there has been substantial progress, trials still have to be made to test this usage on a worldwide basis.

It is envisioned that this type of energy will be very reliable, since the movement of the oceans is so predictable.

Hydro Electric Power: This is already a well known source of energy that uses the water power of dams to create electricity. It is clean and efficient, and so it has become a steady source of power throughout the world.

But there are problems involved in hydro electric power. A large space is required, there is often isruption of marine life, and unpredictable weather can be a factor.

Geothermal Energy: The internal heat of the earth is used to create power. This heat forces steam through vents and the steam runs turbine engines, which power generators.

Biomass Energy: Natural biological processes are used to produce energy in this method. Here are some of the ways energy is created via biomass energy: Methane gas can be produced when biological matter rots. This biological matter can be taken from garbage dumps, landfills and even sewer lines. It uses this free material to produce fuel.

Ethanol: Using agricultural products such as grains and cereals, wood chips or pulp, fuel is created to run vehicles.

Biodiesel: This fuel is made from plant oils. At this point, it is in the experimental stages on small scale usage, but has potential.

As a fuel, it is cleaner and more efficient than oils from petroleum.

From this list of the different types of alternative energies, we can readily see that there are lots to choose from that are effective, efficient and clean.

Alternative energy should be the clear choice over traditional energy.
